Humid Heat Starter Stone Formula

For people living in hot, humid climates to reduce moisture in the air.
The Humid Heat Stone absorbs excess humidity from the air, helping to make indoor spaces feel cooler, drier, and more comfortable. It slowly pulls moisture from the air without turning to mush and is rechargeable.

Ingredients (all common grocery items):

✬ Cornstarch ~ 1 cup
✬ Baking soda ~ 1 cup
Coarse salt (kosher or sea salt) ~ ½ cup
✬ Unflavored gelatin ~ 1 packet (for binding)
✬ Cold water ~ about ¼ cup (to bloom gelatin)
✬ Fine sand or coffee grounds ~ ½ cup (structure + thermal mass)
✬ Optional: A few drops of vinegar or lemon juice (helps firm the mix)

Instructions:

  1. Bloom the gelatin: Mix gelatin with cold water (~¼ cup). Let sit 5 minutes to absorb water.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, combine cornstarch, baking soda, salt, and sand or coffee grounds.
  3. Combine: Stir the bloomed gelatin into the dry mix. Add a few drops of vinegar or lemon juice if using.
  4. Knead: Mix and knead into a firm dough. If too crumbly, add a tiny bit more cold water, one teaspoon at a time. It should hold together well but not be sticky or wet.
  5. Shape: Mold by hand or press into molds. Make grooves or holes to maximize surface area.
  6. Air dry: Let it dry naturally at room temperature, in a shaded, well-ventilated area for 2-3 days until firm.

Notes:

✬ No heating, no baking ~ all cold processed.
The gelatin binds the starch and salts into a firm solid without melting or dissolving with humidity.
Salt + baking soda pull moisture, but the matrix keeps the stone solid and moldable.
Recharge by leaving it in dry air or sun.
Avoid soaking it in water.
